Redesign your website or start over: how to decide

Your site looks dated, but is a refresh enough or should you rebuild it? Warning signs, key questions and how not to lose what you've earned on Google.

Your website is a few years old, you don’t like how it looks and you feel it doesn’t bring in clients. The question comes up on its own: do we fix it or rebuild it?

There’s no single answer, but there are clear signs. Let us help you decide.

First: what’s the real problem?

Before talking about design, think about what isn’t working. The most common problems are:

  • It looks dated and doesn’t reflect what your business is today.
  • It doesn’t bring in inquiries, even though it gets visits.
  • It doesn’t show up on Google.
  • It’s slow or works poorly on phones.
  • It’s hard to update or depends on someone who’s no longer around.
  • It breaks often or has been hacked.

Depending on which one it is, the solution changes a lot.

When a redesign (or an improvement) is enough

Refreshing what you have is usually enough when:

  • The technical foundation is solid: the site is fast, secure and easy to maintain.
  • The problem is visual or content-related: colors, fonts, photos or copy that feel outdated.
  • Specific things aren’t converting: a long form, a hidden contact button, a confusing homepage. What a homepage that converts needs can help here.
  • You already rank well on Google and don’t want to risk that traffic.

In these cases, changing things piece by piece is faster, cheaper and less risky.

When it’s better to start over

Rebuilding the site is usually the best option when:

  • The technology is obsolete: abandoned plugins, versions that no longer get updates or a theme that can’t be adapted to phones.
  • It’s slow by design: if the problem is in the foundation, no optimization fully fixes it. We explain why in website speed.
  • Your business has changed: new services, a different kind of client or a new brand.
  • Every change is a patch, and maintaining it already costs more than rebuilding. More on that in website maintenance.
  • It never worked on phones. That’s unforgivable today; read mobile-first design.

Starting over is also a chance to switch technology. If you’re unsure, WordPress vs. a custom website may help.

Four questions to decide

  1. Does the site load fast on a phone? Measure it for free with PageSpeed Insights.
  2. Can you make changes without fear of breaking something?
  3. Does the page structure reflect your current business?
  4. Do you get inquiries through the website?

If you answered “no” to two or more, starting over is probably the way to go.

Protect what you’ve earned on Google

This is the biggest risk in a redesign, and the one most often overlooked. If your current site ranks on Google with certain pages, changing their addresses (URLs) can wipe out that traffic overnight. To avoid it:

  • List your current pages and which ones get visits (Search Console shows you).
  • Keep the addresses of important pages whenever you can.
  • If they change, set up 301 redirects, which tell Google and browsers where each page lives now.
  • Keep the content that works. If a page ranks well, improve it, but don’t delete it.
  • After launch, check Search Console for a few weeks to catch errors.

An agency that doesn’t ask you about this before rebuilding your site is putting you at risk.

It doesn’t all have to happen at once

A middle path: rebuild in stages. First the homepage and service pages, which have the most impact; then the rest. You see results sooner and spread the investment. To estimate what each option might cost, see how much a website costs.

We’ve been through it ourselves

The Balboa Web site moved from WordPress to a custom site built with Astro, precisely to gain speed and simplify maintenance. It was a decision to start over, made for the same reasons we describe here.
